Rings & Diamonds

The Objective

As part of my self-directed 3D mastery, I focused on high-end jewelry rendering to perfect my understanding of how light interacts with ultra-reflective and refractive surfaces. My goal was to translate the elegance of jewelry photography—specifically the management of complex highlights and gemstone clarity—into my professional bullion projects at the Mint.

The Strategy & Process

I utilized a specialized cross-platform workflow to achieve a photorealistic, "retail-ready" finish:

  • Blender for Geometric Precision & Expert Consultation: I utilized Blender to sculpt the ring bands and set the gemstones, focusing on the technical accuracy of the prongs and facet geometry. To ensure the physical "wearability" and structural integrity of the design, I consulted with a jewelry industry expert (my mother) whose professional background helped me refine the stone setting and band proportions for the blue ring. This collaborative feedback ensured the light paths were not only beautiful in a render but grounded in real-world craftsmanship.

  • KeyShot for Material Science: I migrated the models into KeyShot for post-production and material application. KeyShot’s advanced ray-tracing allowed me to fine-tune the "fire" and "brilliance" within the yellow and blue gemstones, managing the IOR (Index of Refraction) to match real-world physics.

  • Digital Studio Lighting: I applied my background in physical product photography to a digital space, using custom HDRI environments to create "hero" highlights on the gold bands without washing out the colorized details.

  • Reflective Translation: The primary challenge was mastering the "bounce" of light. By learning how to control reflections in jewelry, I gained the skills to eliminate unwanted "hot spots" in silver bullion photography and 3D mockups.

The Result

This project solidified my ability to portray precious items with an editorial, "high-jewelry" aesthetic. By mastering the interplay between Blender and KeyShot, I developed a workflow that allows for the rapid creation of photorealistic assets that feel warm, expensive, and tactile. These skills directly influenced my approach to the Lunar Series and other high-value strikes, ensuring every product is portrayed with maximum perceived value.
